HOW TO FIND YOUR VOCAL RANGLE

Freddie Mercury and Whitney Houston, Axlrose, Mariah Carey, Prince, and Whitney Houston. These five singers are known for their amazing vocal ranges. These singers’ vocal ranges reach the highest limits of what the human body can do. What is a vocal range? How can you improve your performance?

What is VOCAL RANGE?

Your anatomy makes your voice unique. Vocal cords can be described as folds of the throat tissue that vibrate together to produce sound. Your sound quality and range are determined by the vocal cords and the size and shape of your resonance chambers. Vocal range refers to the top octaves that your voice can reach.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE MALE’S VOCAL RANGE

It can range from 1.5 to 2 octaves for some, but it can also reach up to six (Freddie Mercury and Mike Patton).

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE FEMALE VOCAL RANGE

It is usually between 2 and 3 octaves. However, some artists can go higher, like Mariah Carey, who has a 5-octave range.

Six main categories are used to classify vocal ranges. These groups can be useful when you sing traditional, arranged music. Modern rock and pop music may have more exceptions to these rules. Knowing your range will help you find the songs that suit your voice best. You don’t have to sing all the notes in these categories, but it does tell you where your voice is strongest.

FIND YOUR VOCAL RANGE

These classifications are based upon traditional arranged music and not pop/rock music, where many lead singers will defy the “rules.” How do you determine your vocal range? There are many ways to do this. You can start by following the School of Rock Method exercises.

  1. Open the app and click on the menu at the top. Next, select Content > All. This will open the content that is available to you.
  2. Choose the Voice Method Book 1.
  3. Start with Module 1 (Total breathing exercise) to warm up for vocalizing.
  4. Go to Module 2’s Lip Trills and Sirens to get your voice warm-up. It is not a good idea to sing with cold vocal cords.
  5. To find the lowest note in your range, search for “Noo Nee Noo Downwards”. Note the lowest note that you can sing.
  6. Search the exercise “Finding Your Range” and follow that to find your upper range. Note the highest note that you can sing.
